The graves were located behind the fortifications. Note the barren "No Mans Land" that surrounds the town of Centreville. The entire area, as far as the eye could see, had been stripped bare by both armies to build forts, roads, bridges, and to supply wood for campfires. During the winter months armies would build temporary towns of wooden huts to house their troops. By the end of the war there wasn't a tree left standing. At the current rate of development it won't be long before Centreville is once again stripped of it's tree's. However a tree can grow back... our heritage can't, once it's gone, it's gone forever. |
