Although the 21st Mass and 51st NY remained out of contact they continued their advance through the tangled woods more or less in line with each other. The gentle slope of the ridge became more defined and imperceptibly began to further separate the regiments with each step northward. The topography guided the 51st NY further to the right as the regiment followed the path of least resistance along the base of the ridge.

On the opposite side, the 21st Mass was on a more gentle slope that caused them to veer slightly to the west but still parallel to the crest of the ridge. Where the 51st NY was being led away from the Rebel line, the 21st Mass was headed directly for it...
