8th Michigan Battle Flag

| In battle the large brilliantly colored banners marked the position of each unit--and made the flag bearers targets of enemy fire. The above flag was the one carried by the 8th Michigan during the Battle of Ox Hill. Given the extreme weather conditions, battle flags were essential in maintaining any sense of command and control. The flag is currently undergoing conservation which is why some of the stars are obscured. |
| When the state of Michigan opened its new Capitol in 1879, it's battle flags from the Civil War had a place of honor. Today citizens from Michigan and beyond contribute to their conservation and preservation. The battle flags are cared for by a unique partnership between the Michigan Historical Museum and the Michigan Capitol Committee. |
