The above non-regulation issue Confederate flat button (one
piece gold plated brass) was found at the junction of Route 50 and West Ox road. The
manufacturer's backmark was Pittman and Day, Baltimore. There were also a number of
unfired bullets, U.S. cartridge box plates, confederate buttons and other miscellaneous
artifacts found in the same general area.Interpretation
This unique artifact illustrates the feelings of a homesick confederate soldier.
Mr. F.E. (initials on the button) had just survived a major battle that was fought in a
cold driving rain. He was tired , wet, and probably didn't find a campfire until late that
evening.
It is easy to imagine him engraving his home by the light of a campfire with a
needle or penknife. His comrades were most likely salvaging equipment from the
battlefield, discarding U.S. insignia from dry Yankee cartridge boxes and dumping their
own wet ammunition.
