This first U.S. coin pattern was recovered near the Dranesville Tavern, further north of Ox Hill. It was also the site of one of J.E.B. Stuart's first skirmishes in 1861. The last owner of this half disme was one the the new Americans who frequently traveled the colonial roads through the rolling hills and fields of Fairfax County, Virginia.
This first "official" U.S. coin pattern was minted in July 1792 when George Washington supplied approximately 100 dollars worth of his own silver to mint 1500 half dimses. Although the first production of these coins for general circulation was dated as 1794, it wasn't until February 1795 that the half disme was first minted for commerce.
